Two grab bars can look identical online and behave very differently after five years in a shower. Here's what to look for on the spec sheet.
Stainless steel grade
- 304 stainless: the standard for plumbing fixtures. Contains nickel and chromium, resists rust in a wet bathroom, and takes a polish. All LiveWell bars are 304.
- 430 stainless: cheaper, no nickel, magnetic, and prone to surface rust in humid rooms. Common in bargain bars.
- Chrome-plated steel or zinc: not stainless at all. Plating chips and the base metal rusts.
Quick test: a magnet sticks firmly to 430 and plated steel, weakly or not at all to 304.
Wall thickness (gauge)
Lower gauge means thicker steel. 18 gauge (about 0.048 inch) is the commercial standard and what LiveWell uses. 20 or 22 gauge tubing dents and can crush at the flange under load.
Finishes
- Satin / peened: the classic commercial look, hides water spots, best grip when bare.
- Polished chrome: mirror finish that matches most faucets. Slick when wet, so pair it with rubber grips.
- Brushed nickel: warm, low-glare, hides fingerprints. The most popular residential finish.
- Matte black: a PVD or powder coat over stainless. Choose PVD for durability in a shower.
Flanges and welds
Look for welded flanges with three screw holes each. Bars where the tube is crimped or pressed into the flange are the ones that fail. Our standard ADA grab bars and decorative grab bars both use welded 3-hole flanges with snap-on covers.
