People ask what a grab bar is rated for, but the honest answer is that the rating belongs to the whole system: bar, screws, anchors, and wall.

The ADA minimum

ADA standards require a grab bar and its mounting to withstand a 250 lb force applied in any direction without failing. That is a floor, not a ceiling.

What LiveWell bars are built for

LiveWell grab bars are 18-gauge 304 stainless steel with welded flanges. Installed into studs with the included #14 stainless screws, they are tested well beyond the ADA minimum; several decorative models are rated to 500 lb. The swing-up bar, which carries its load on a cantilever, is rated for 330 lb. The exact figure for each model is on its spec sheet under spec sheets and install videos.

Why the wall matters more than the bar

A 500 lb bar screwed into 1/2 inch drywall with plastic anchors is a 30 lb bar. To get the rated strength:

  • Fasten into studs or 2x blocking with the supplied screws, at least 1-1/2 inches of thread in wood.
  • Where a stud isn't available, use a hollow-wall anchor tested for grab bars, such as the Mount Daddy fasteners included with our decorative line.
  • Never mount into a grout line, a drywall seam, or a soft or water-damaged section of wall.

The test that matters

After installing, hang your full weight on the bar. Then push and pull it hard from every direction. If it moves, the mounting is wrong. If it doesn't, it will hold in a fall.
