Don't Be Fooled with a False Sense of Security
Unfortunately, these grab bars exist in our market today. They are dangerous for people of all ages, especially seniors because while they may look permanent, they could fail to support you at any time. In reality, most suction bars are not rated to support more than 100–150 pounds (and even this can fail due to suction loss).
The suction cup grab bar can lose suction without warning because the suction mechanism can loosen due to moisture build up, temperature change, and tile textures or surface irregularities. The bar may detach suddenly during use, leading to falls or serious injury.
Suction cup grab bars also deteriorate quickly. The suction mechanism and rubber seals can degrade from heat and humidity, mold or mildew, and frequent repositioning. All these factors quickly lead to loss of effectiveness and hidden risks.
The most important factor is they DO NOT meet ADA or Code Standards. Suction cup grab bars are not ADA-Compliant. They are not permitted for use in licensed healthcare facilities or Senior Living Communities. Most professional installs and occupational therapists do not recommend them.
