A fixed side-wall bar is the best support at a toilet, but plenty of toilets don't have a wall on either side. That's what a fold-down (also called swing-up or flip-up) grab bar is for.
When it's the right choice
- No side wall: the toilet sits in the open or next to a vanity. A fold-down bar mounts on the rear wall and swings down beside the seat.
- Two-sided support: a fixed bar on one side and a fold-down on the other lets the user push up with both hands.
- Caregiver access: the bar folds up out of the way for transfers and cleaning.
- Shared bathrooms: other family members don't have to work around it.
Installation is different
A fold-down bar carries body weight on a 31 inch lever. Every bit of that load goes into the rear wall mounting, so this bar must be screwed into studs or 2x blocking, never hollow-wall anchors. If the rear wall studs don't line up with where the bar needs to be, open the wall and add blocking.
Height and position
Mount so the bar sits 33 to 36 inches above the floor when lowered, 15 to 18 inches from the toilet centerline, matching any fixed bar on the opposite side.
