What Are Commercial ADA Grab Bars For?

Commercial ADA grab bars are for helping those with physical and/or mental disabilities navigate the bathroom safely. They are designed to support a person’s weight while they lift or lower themselves from a wheelchair, or simply lower themselves onto a bench in the shower or onto the toilet itself.

They are an essential in any public restroom, but these have implications in private bathrooms too, such as the ones in your home. You never know when a house guest will need a bit of assistance in the bathroom, and how nice would it be for them if you happened to have it for them?

The best part about our grab bars is we have some really nice, classy ones that will make your restroom pop. Some of our grab bars are designed for multi-functional use. They not only act as a support means if needed, but they can be a toilet paper holder, or a towel rack, etc.

We’ll talk more about which specific bathrooms need one later on, and we’ll also explain how these should be hung to stay compliant. Let’s quickly cover the different types of commercial grab bars.

If you’re trying to install these commercial ADA grab bars in the bathroom yourself, it can be a bit daunting. After all, regulations are strict, and the last thing you want to do is get in trouble or upset a disabled customer who ends up struggling in your restroom.

Luckily for you, we have the knowledge necessary to get the job done right, too! Here is what you need to know.

Should Commercial Grab Bars Be Vertical Or Horizontal?

This is a common question we get asked. It’s likely that your facility will need both vertical and horizontal grab bars, however.

We are going to outline the specific requirements in terms of orientation below, along with length requirements, location, and more.

Requirements For Commercial ADA Grab Bars In The Toilet

When it comes to the toilet, you’ll need a few different grab bars in your commercial restroom. In terms of hanging height, they should be at 33”-36” off the floor.

The only exception to this is if the restroom is for children specifically - in this case, the hanging height should be 18”-27” off the floor, depending on specific age. But anywhere in this range is acceptable.

On the inside wall, the grab bar should be less than 12” from the rear wall on the closest side. It must be at least 42” long. The grab bar on the rear of the toilet should be 36” long, with 12” extending to one side and 24” to the other side.

In general, it’s important to note that ADA compliance measures the length of the grab bar from the flange to flange (centered), and then the width of one flange is added to the length.

Requirements For Commercial ADA Grab Bars In The Shower & Bathtub

Things can get pretty tricky, pretty quickly in the shower and bathtub when it comes to commercial grab bars. To remain ADA compliant, you have to be aware of specifications for different types of showers and tubs.

In a roll in shower (standard), you must place grab bars on the back wall and across from the seat. Make sure the bars are not above the seat, and if a seat isn’t present, you’ll need another grab bar on the third wall.

In a transfer shower, however, you need grab bars on the back wall as well, but on the control wall instead of the wall with the seat. The back wall grab bar should be at least 18” from the control wall.

In alternate roll-in showers, on the other hand, you should place grab bars on the wall furthest from the entrance and on the back wall, and should not be above the seat.

If your shower is in a single-occupant private office, or a residential office, grab bars actually aren’t required. However, the wall must be reinforced and located to allow for the installation of bars at a later date if desired.
